IPL Multi-Billion Dollar Brand

A Multi-Billion Dollar Brand-IPL 2019

IPL, Every cricket fan in this world is familiar with this name and loves it, well maybe except Pakistan, they are not a big fan of IPL for obvious reasons. Anyway, the Indian Premier League is well received among the world and It is the league where players from different countries play as a single team. IPL this year is the closest to a fan’s dream fantasy cricket.

But how many of you know IPL is a multi-billion dollar brand,
IPL brand value in 2015 is $3.54 billion, In 2016 it hiked to $4.16 billion, and in 2017 it is hiked to $5.3 billion, that’s 26% hike.

YearBrand ValueHike %
2019
2018$6.30 billion19%
2017$5.30 billion26%
2016$4.20 billion18.46%

2011$3.67 billion-11.13%
2010$4.13 billion106.5%
2009$2.00 billion

As you can see from the above table despite of its deflation in 2011 and 2012, IPL is now standing firm with a great inflation rate.

Now the Indian Premier League (IPL) is back again, bringing 60 days of entertainment and excitement through the Nation’s most beloved game. This time the seasonal tournament turned 12, more than a decade of pure entertainment.

No one expected that the IPL would become a massive hit when it was inaugurated in 2008. Though different countries tried to start their own T20 tournaments, it was the cash-rich BCCI that prevailed, externally and internally, and it has no turning back since then on despite the equally mindblowing scandals and controversies.

Financially, BCCI states that 2015 season IPL makes a whopping 75 thousand crores to the GDP of Indian Economy. It’s no surprise to hear that. In this cricket-crazy country, that sounds to be making a good business and you can understand while other T20 tournaments in other countries failed to match to it or even to couldn’t make it to the headlines.

The IPL is a pure entertainer as well as a money-spinner. Through ticket sales, franchise fee, internet and broadcasting rights, sponsorships, ground advertisements, and various other advertising techniques result in a pure business model with entertainment as its outward face. Vivo took the sponsorship rights for 2200 crores. And Star TV Network acquired global media rights for 16,347 crores. Those figures say everything, don’t they?

With alternatives to conducting the games in countries like South Africa and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), its fame shot the world over as one of the lucrative sports in the world. Despite the overseas episodes, there was no diminish neither in its viewership nor in its sponsors.

If we liken the IPL, we can liken it to the gladiator shows in the erstwhile Roman Empire. Just as we are cricket-maniac, those of the Roman Empire were crazy about the shows.

But it’s all in the minds of people whether to make it successful or flat flop. For example, Pro Kabaddi which has been also a huge hit since its inception, making good profits to the organizers and other stakeholders. It’s how the organizers cash in on people’s pulse!
