In this competitive world, every individual will start a career as an executive or trainee. At this stage, he/she should report to the high authority i.e to the team leader or a boss. One can adopt the skills which as they gain experience. From each and every individual management expects beyond expectations. As the level of promotion increases, the roles and responsibilities of the management also increase.
Once the management has appointed you as a team leader; it’s a challenging task. You need to manage all your tasks and at the same time, you need to monitor your peer’s tasks. Not everyone peer will be same because few many like and few many dislikes. Because each and every individual will come from different backgrounds such as place, culture and educational background. These days managing a small team is a difficult task. But, it is your responsibility that they are on the right track to follow you. 1. Communication: Maintain good communication
As a team leader, it is your responsibility to maintain good communication with your team members. Discuss the on-going projects with a detailed description such as strategic objectives, goals and deadlines. Make the responsibilities clear so that everyone knows who’s doing what, why and by when. It’s also important to encourage and give them feedback and inform them that your door is always open for you (for any issues or clarifications about the project). Remember one thing the communication has to be two-way communication i.e give them a chance to speak about the project and let them come up with different thoughts and ideas by thinking out of the box.
2. Relationship: Build a positive relationship
It’s important to know members of your team individually not only about the professional life but, also about personal life. Individually spend some time with each member of your team and discuss the personal life and give some valuable inputs on work-life balance. By this, you can know individual interest and their next career planning as well.
3. Acknowledge: For the good work
Be smart in identifying good performance and reward them. Create a challenging atmosphere so everyone tries to think to give the best. The achievements make a bigger impact on the career and which is an added advantage to the profile. Definitely, hard work will be paid off. At the same time give equal importance to the poor performance and identify where it is going wrong.
4. Be real
The top-level management doesn’t consider you as superhuman because every human makes mistakes. But, as a TL you shouldn’t cover the mistakes you need to bring them to management. For suppose if you are feeling pressure and need help then, management will come forward to help.
5. Be decisive
A good leader has to take the decisions at the right time for the team and to be supportive to the management. Some of the decisions may work and few many go wrong but, be positive and based on your strengths just move on to face the upcoming challenges.
When you know the SWOT analysis of each individual of your team based on the strengths assigns the task to generate the quality output within less period of time. Usually, people perform better when they have interest and passion to do the job which is assigned to them and at the same time it will reflect the productivity of the team.
7. Manage conflicts
In any organization, conflicts arise. But they shouldn’t be ignored and they have to be addressed immediately. As a team leader directly you can’t take the decision it’s better to take some time and discuss with higher management to make a final decision.
8. Be an example to others
In any organizations most of the team members except a lot of guidance and inspiration from you. So, set a good example in order to gain their respect. It also depends on the way you behave and commits towards the work. It’s important to be yourself and to believe in yourself. Be open and honest with everyone and treat every member as an asset to the team. Give them confidence that we all are working towards the success of a big picture.
